A new medication that combines the well-known antidepressant ciprofloxacin and the anti-psychotic fluoxetine is available from the pharmacy in an injectable form.
The medication, named Zyban, is approved for use as a smoking cessation aid. It works by stopping smoking, reducing stress, and enhancing overall happiness.
“We have been looking for a product that works for smoking cessation for decades,” said Dr. Robert W. Hahn, Chief of Biotechnology Sciences, the company that manufactures Zyban.
“We believe there’s a significant amount of interest in the development of a smoking cessation product for the treatment of nicotine disorders,” he said.
“It has been reported in the scientific literature that it may be useful for people who want to quit smoking. We believe that it will be an important part of the treatment plan for smoking cessation,” he said.
The new drug is a combination of two medicines, an antipsychotic, and the anti-psychotic fluoxetine, which belongs to the family of medicines known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
According to the FDA, the combination of the two medicines helps reduce the risk of relapse in smokers who have been diagnosed with a mental illness. The combination may also be used to help control smoking-related illness.
“This is an exciting development and it would be very exciting to see how we can create a smoking cessation product that can be used by people who want to quit smoking,” said Dr. Hahn.

“Our findings were published in the July issue of theNew England Journal of Medicinethat showed this combination of medicines could reduce both the severity of depression and the risk of developing a mental illness,” said Dr. Michael L. Leucht, Ph. D., a professor of psychiatry at George Washington University, Washington, and lead investigator of the study.
“It’s a unique approach in the treatment of depression and anxiety, and it has been shown to be effective in reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders,” said Leucht.
Dr. Hahn said he and his team are excited about the new approach and hope it can help individuals quit smoking. The study was sponsored by the Wellcome Trust and the University of California, San Francisco.
Ciprofloxacin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Ciprofloxacin works by blocking the effects of cyclooxygenase enzymes.
